Mascara Review…

July 23, 2010

Every time I get a new mascara the others are banished to the back of the drawer whether I was enjoying them or not…there’s just something about a new mascara.  It’s probably the fact that there’s loads of wet gunky product in there that hasn’t had a chance to dry out, or maybe it’s the novelty value.  Then every once in a while I give one a second chance and I’ll be glad I did because I’d forgotten how good it really was.  I’ve reviewed six different mascaras here…all different brands too, including before and after pics and rated them from favourite to least fave.  Also what the brands’ say about them and if it’s true or not!

For each mascara, I first curled my lashes for five seconds with the Shu Uemura eyelash curlers then applied two coats to give them all a fair trial…here are the results, but bear in mind they all look a bit funny sans eye liner or any other make up!

In first place… MAC Zoom Lash in ZoomBlack, the second most expensive at about €16.50

What they say: Major drama. Lasts all day. Creamy, velvety formula builds density and conditions. Feels light, supple. Ultra-sculpted brush has three-sided fibres to embrace and separate each lash, hugging every curve. Coats in one stroke from root to tip. No smudging.

I have to say that this is a fairly accurate description, you could really get away with just one coat but I don’t just like ‘major drama’, I like major ott style drama so I’d do two.  The downside is that it can be quite messy to apply, you’ll probably need to clean up mistakes with a cotton bud and comb through with a clean mascara wand or lash comb.  If clumpy isn’t your thing then give this a miss.  But to me, clumpy equals volume… so it’s a winner!

A very close second… Rimmel London The Max Volume Flash Mascara in Ultra Black, bargainous for under a tenner!

What they say: Take your lashes to the new MAX! Exclusive Quick setting ‘Lash Expand’ formula with Collagen to fatten and Keratin to strengthen. Lashes are pumped to full volume. Skinny to fat in 10 SECONDS FLAT. Our BIGGEST BRUSH EVER with unique ‘Perfect Fit’ technology for perfect coating of each lash. No Clumps. 14x more lash volume with no clumps in 10 SECONDS FLAT!

Quite a claim there, firstly the no clumps thing…not true.  Again though, for me this isn’t a bad thing necessarily.  I’m not sure about all the science stuff but this definitely added volume and fast, it’s really black too but can be quite messy.  Other than that I can’t fault this mascara…build it up for even more impact and if you find it too clumpy, simply comb through.  Great value for money!

In third…Cover Girl Lash Blast Volume in black. Cheep and cheerful under $10

What they say: Get a blast of lush, volumized lashes! LashBlast’s patented volume-boosting formula and patent-pending brush are designed to max-out each and every lash, leaving you with the ultimate big lash look.

This one is quite different to the first two, the brush really grabs every single eyelash and gives a much less clumpy, much softer, yet still defined look.  You do get a ‘big lash look’ and it does get every lash so that part can be believed, it’s not the ultimate in volume though and I feel like it could have a more sooty black pigment than it does.  What I love this mascara for though, is to use under false lashes…it’s perfect as it defines, lengthens and separates the lashes, giving them a good coating ready for lashes to sit on top without making them too big.  This mascara is perfect if you have a lot of lashes and want a natural look.  I love the brush, it’s really easy to use and I never get any smudges with it.  Also comes in waterproof.

Next up in fourth is… Maybelline Lash Stiletto Ultimate Length, another drugstore bargain.

What they say: The only mascara that does for lashes what stilettos do for legs.

  • The Grip & Extend brush grasps each lash and coats from every angle
  • Elastic formula stretches lashes for provocative length
  • Pro-Vitamin B-5 formula conditions and smoothes for black-patent shine
  • Contact lens safe and Ophthalmologist tested

This definitely didn’t ‘grasp each lash’, more like it stuck them together which gave the impression of having less lashes but it did provide length and had a nice glossy black finish.  I think it’s really a case of whether you prefer length or volume and if it’s length, then this one is for you…but for me, I’m looking forward to trying their new ‘Voluptuous’ version which has the tagline Now long lashes don’t have to be skinny.

Second last (and most expensive at around €26) is… Givenchy Phenomen’ Eyes in Phenomen’ Black.

What they say: Its innovative new design and high-precision application method will make all existing mascaras a thing of the past.  For many women, applying mascara is still a difficult process.  Without a steady hand, it is hard to get precise results.  That’s why Givenchy has taken a leaf out of this daring new design offering a brand-new way to apply mascara. Givenchy’s groundbreaking patented spherical brush reaches everywhere.  It simplifies application, for perfectly shaped eyes and spectacular panoramic results.

What I say: Complete B.S. You’d have to have the hand of Da Vinci to work with this thing…it’s very spikey, even sharp spherical brush is really difficult and maybe even a bit dangerous to use ‘without a steady hand’.  It takes aaaages to apply because the brush is so small and you only get a few lashes with each sweep.  The results aren’t that bad but I just don’t think it’s worth the effort or money.  What I do like this mascara for, however, is for using over falsies.  It’s great to add a bit of mascara on to the ends and can get into the little inner corner lashes after the strip ends like no other, helping to blend the false lashes into your own.  Is it worth it?  Probably not.

Last and most definitely least… Anastasia Lash Lifting, way overpriced at $22

What they say: One coat of this exclusive silky, non-clumping, double effect mascara will add full volume thickness and uplifting curl.

In a word, rubbish.  The mascara and their claims, that is.  Well actually I’ll give it non-clumping, but it was also non-everything else.  Let me put it this way, if this is the only mascara there was, I would save my time and pennies for more cocktails and go without!  I have to also point out that this was a brand new never before used tube so there’s no excuse.

Next up to try is the new Revlon Grow Luscious mascara which claims to help your lashes grow stronger and MAC’s new Opulash mascara which is supposed to be their best yet, but until then I’ll be sticking with my Zoom Lash and Max Volume Flash.  What are your favourite mascaras?
